ACTIVITIES IN FUERTEVENTURA

Fuerteventura boasts not only stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, but also a rugged volcanic landscape waiting to be explored.

Walking among its ancient volcanic craters, lava fields and rugged peaks offers a unique perspective on the island's geological history and natural beauty.

Here we will delve into some of the most fascinating volcanic trails in Fuerteventura, suitable for explorers of all levels.

Calderón Hondo: Location: Lajares

Difficulty: Easy Duration: 1-2 hours

Calderón Hondo is a dormant volcanic crater located near the city of Lajares but also accessible from Northern Corralejo and, more adventurously, from La Capellania. From Lajares a well-marked path takes visitors up a gentle climb to the crater rim, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It will be possible, especially for children, to travel part of the route on the back of a dromedary.

Inside the crater you will encounter a surreal landscape dotted with scattered vegetation and volcanic rocks. Take your time to soak in the tranquility of this ancient caldera before descending to the trailhead.

Bayuyo - One of the oldest and most emblematic

The Bayuyo volcano is located in the north of the island, near the city of Lajares, and is part of an alignment of volcanic cones that extends from Isla de Lobos to Montaña Colorada. The Bayuyo volcano has two craters, one of which has a diameter of about 300 meters and a depth of about 50 meters. Its eruption, about 10,000 years ago, was very important for the formation of the island, since its lava increased the surface of Fuerteventura by about 100 km2.

The Bayuyo volcano is a place of great geological, landscape and cultural interest, since in its surroundings there are archaeological remains from the pre-Hispanic era, such as circular dry stone constructions that served as accommodation and enclosures for livestock. Furthermore, the Bayuyo volcano offers spectacular views of the northern part of the island, where you can see other volcanoes such as Calderón Hondo, Las Calderas or Montaña Colorada.

The Bayuyo volcano can be visited by following a marked path that starts from the town of Lajares and is approximately 4 km long. or from Corralejo along the path near the industrial quarry in the Morro Francisco area. The Bayuyo volcano is, without a doubt, one of the volcanoes in Fuerteventura that is worth knowing and admiring.
